The center for disease control CDC reports that vitamin D deficiency in the United States alone is 32% in children and adults.  Some researchers believe that number to be closer to 50% of the population being deficient or displaying insufficient levels of vitamin D.  The shocking levels of children aged 6 to 11 years old deficient in vitamin D is close to 70%.

So why and how did these new statistics start appearing and why have we not been aware of this until recently?  Before the year 2000 doctors were unaware of these shocking statistics.  With the development of new technology that allowed inexpensive testing of vitamin D deficiency levels, researchers initiated testing and the shocking results were made public and the levels are growing higher with more researchers, more testing and more studies.

With all the new research being done it has become clear that almost half of the population are not at the optimal level of vitamin D in their blood levels which is between 50 and 70 ng/ml. For treatment of chronic disease such as cancer, recommendations go even a bit higher than that.

There are certain groups of people who run a higher risk of a vitamin D Deficiency than others.

  • People who do not get at least 15 minutes of sun exposure a day during the time the sun is directly overhead.
  • People who live farther away from the equator such as Canada or northern states of the US.
  • People with darker skin who need more sun exposure than light or fair skinned people.
  • People who are constantly indoors during the day without getting outdoors.
  • People who are older who have thinner skin resulting in a lack of vitamin D production.
  • People who are obese or overweight.
  • Pregnant women.
  • Breastfed Infants who are not supplemented with vitamin D or breastfed by a mother who is deficient.
